Internationalization, virtual academic mobility, and hospitality within the scope of Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL)

This article aims to present an analysis of hospitality/welcoming dynamics established in synchronous virtual academic mobility (MAV) classes by the Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) learning model. Theoretically, hospitality is understood as a socio-relational phenomenon, in which both subjects who are involved change in the relationship, and it can be identified from the dimensions of symmetry and synchrony (Perazzolo et al., 2016) and their respective patterns. The research, of an exploratory and qualitative nature, used, as an instrument, the semi-structured interview with teachers and students who participated in the MAV by COIL. To analyze the statements, we opted for the Bakhtinian enunciative line, which analyzes the statements in the interactions between the subjects (Bakhtin, 1997). The results, considering the typological dimensions and their respective patterns, point to the presence of hospitality throughout the experience, and the discursive markers point out that welcoming dynamics occur previously, in the preparation of classes, during, in the interactions that occurred between teachers and students, and extend beyond the mobility experience. The hospitality dynamics, identified in the COIL learning model, exemplify MAV hospitality.
